Emily Swanson is director of public opinion research at The Associated Press, where she oversees questionnaire design and editorial coverage of AP VoteCast, along with polls conducted by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. As part of her role guiding journalists in their use of polling data, she helped develop updated polling standards published in a new chapter of “The Associated Press Stylebook” in 2018. A member of the AP polling unit in Washington since 2014, she also serves as a member of AP’s election night decision team. Prior to joining the AP, she was polling director at The Huffington Post. Swanson began her career in survey research at the poll aggregation website Pollster.com. She is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a native of Saint Paul, Minnesota.
