Sol Taishoff Award for Excellence in Broadcast Journalism
Award Established 1983

Al Roker of NBC’s TODAY has been selected for the 2023 Sol Taishoff Award for Excellence in Broadcast Journalism from the National Press Foundation.

Roker has “entered people’s homes and given them weather news, comfort and camaraderie for more than four decades,” NPF judges said.

“As the world and industry has undergone huge transformation, Al’s steadfastness stands out,” said NPF judges. “He has built a community around the TODAY show that helps connect people from all over the world to ‘your neck of the woods.’”

Roker accepted the award at NPF’s Annual Awards Dinner on Feb. 15 in Washington, D.C.

Good Morning America co-anchor Robin Roberts accepted the 2022 Sol Taishoff Award for Excellence in Broadcast Journalism at the National Press Foundation’s annual dinner at the Waldorf Astoria in Washington, D.C. Feb. 23, 2023.

NPF’s judges saluted Roberts’ decades of excellence in broadcast journalism—and also her resilience.

The National Press Foundation received a generous bequest from the late Sol Taishoff, founder and editor of Broadcasting Magazine and a veteran of electronic journalism. The foundation created this prestigious award for distinguished service to broadcast journalism, whether during a lifetime of service or during an exceptional year’s work.

The Taishoff Award is given to a U.S.-based broadcaster for a body of quality work in video or audio journalism that represents the highest standards of journalism. The award may recognize an individual’s accomplishment in field reporting, producing, writing or work at the anchor desk. The award includes a cash prize of $5,000 and the winner participates in NPF’s annual awards event. Applications are not accepted for this award.

Norah O’Donnell, CBS Evening News anchor and Managing Editor won the 2021 Sol Taishoff Award for Excellence in Broadcast Journalism.

NPF’s judges recognized O’Donnell’s leadership of the network’s news coverage over the tumultuous year, as well as her more than two decades of excellence in television news reporting. She accepted the award at the annual awards dinner May 4, 2022.
