$5,000 AWARD
Sol Taishoff Award for Excellence in Broadcast Journalism
Award Established 1983

Legendary sportscaster Bob Costas will receive the National Press Foundation 2025 Sol Taishoff Award for Excellence in Broadcast Journalism.

Costas has been an authoritative voice on every major U.S. sport. In his nearly 40-year career with NBC, he hosted 12 Olympic Games and seven Super Bowls, covered 10 NBA Finals and seven World Series, not to mention other highly viewed events, such as the Kentucky Derby and U.S. Open.

“Bob Costas’ at-ease delivery is backed by a probing interview style, prosaic writing, and an encyclopedic knowledge that spans sports, global affairs, and pop culture,” NPF judges said. “Costas brings preparation and gravitas to any assignment, often providing moments of community around human trial and achievement. He represents and honors the best of what American broadcasting can be – a shared moment of resonance.”

Costas will accept the award at the 2026 NPF Awards Dinner on March 12 at the Ritz-Carlton in Washington, D.C.

The National Press Foundation received a generous bequest from the late Sol Taishoff, founder and editor of Broadcasting Magazine and a veteran of electronic journalism. The foundation created this prestigious award for distinguished service to broadcast journalism, whether during a lifetime of service or during an exceptional year’s work.

The Taishoff Award is given to a U.S.-based broadcaster for a body of quality work in video or audio journalism that represents the highest standards of journalism. The award may recognize an individual’s accomplishment in field reporting, producing, writing or work at the anchor desk. The award includes a cash prize of $5,000 and the winner participates in NPF’s annual awards event. Applications are not accepted for this award.

Christiane Amanpour, CNN’s chief international anchor of the global affairs program “Amanpour,” won the 2024 Sol Taishoff Award for Excellence in Broadcast Journalism.

Other recent winners include Al Roker of NBC’s TODAY, Good Morning America co-anchor Robin Roberts and Norah O’Donnell, CBS Evening News anchor.
