NPF and Hinrich Foundation Create International Trade Journalism Award

By Sandy K. Johnson

The National Press Foundation and the Hinrich Foundation have established a new journalism award to honor excellence in international trade reporting.

The award, titled “Hinrich Foundation Award for Distinguished Reporting on Trade”, intends to encourage exemplary journalism that advances the understanding of international trade. The award carries a $10,000 prize.

“With this award, we will honor journalists who have made exceptional contributions to informing and stimulating discussion about the future of global trade,” said Merle A. Hinrich, founder and chairman of the Hinrich Foundation, a nonprofit organization focused on promoting sustainable global trade.

“NPF is excited to offer this exceptional new award to journalists who cover trade across the globe. It is a natural extension of our respected training and education programs for journalists,” said Sandy K. Johnson, president and chief operating officer of NPF.

The award is open to any professional journalist whose work exemplifies the highest standards of journalism and is published by a trustworthy news organization. Print, broadcast and digital journalists are welcome to apply. The window to submit entries for the inaugural Hinrich Foundation award will open in August.

The winner will receive a trip to Washington, D.C., to accept the award at NPF’s annual journalism awards dinner on Feb. 13, 2020. The dinner draws 1,000 journalists, media, communications managers, corporate executives and policymakers.

The National Press Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, educates journalists on the top issues of the day and trains them to use the cutting-edge digital tools they need to keep pace in today’s media environment. NPF encourages excellence in journalism through its suite of prestigious awards. NPF is recognized as a leading force for training journalists in critical policy issues as well as the latest technological innovations. It offers webinars, half-day briefings and multi-day immersive boot camps for practicing journalists on topics ranging from A (artificial intelligence) to Z (Zika).

The Hinrich Foundation is a unique, independent and authoritative voice on sustainable global trade. It aims to influence and improve trade behaviors and outcomes, so that trade continues to create maximum benefits for all its participants and enhances geopolitical stability. It produces forward-looking policy research, and programs that educate and engage stakeholders on global trade issues. The Foundation’s work is driven by the belief that sustainable global trade requires mutually acceptable terms and balanced economic, social and environmental outcomes.

The Hinrich Foundation was founded in 2012 by Merle A. Hinrich. As founder and former executive chairman of Global Sources, a company focused on facilitating trade, he dedicated his life and the activities of his company and foundation to advancing sustainable global trade and, more broadly, international trade between the East and the West.
