The number of Americans without health insurance is projected to increase by 10 million in 2034 due to the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which will lead to healthcare spending cuts. Roughly $1 trillion in Medicaid funding will be cut over the next decade, dramatically changing the government program that provides health insurance for adults and children with limited income and resources.
Medicaid funding cuts are only part of a broader shift in the overall climate of U.S. health policy. In the months and years to come, experts anticipate massive changes in the way millions access and use health care due to legislative decisions that will affect preventative care, maternal care, chronic care management, mental health and other services, with the brunt of these changes affecting underserved communities.
To help journalists in their mission to produce accurate, contextual coverage of the implications of new and emerging legislation on healthcare in both urban and rural areas, the National Press Foundation will bring together experts to answer questions on how nonprofit hospitals are adjusting to serve their communities. Sign up now for NPF’s online briefing, “What the Big Beautiful Bill Means for Hospitals & Underserved Communities,” Sept. 3, 12-1 p.m.
