Do Russian oligarchs have yachts moored in harbors in your coverage areas? Are there other Kremlin-affiliated investments in communities you are covering?
As most of the world’s democracies scramble to enforce sanctions on Russia over alleged war crimes in Ukraine, journalists all over the world are being assigned to track hidden or not-so-hidden Russian holdings in companies, properties, yachts and bank accounts from Switzerland to Singapore.
This free online briefing from the National Press Foundation will feature three expert panelists:
Former CIA officer Alex Z. Finley, who frequently shares her maritime scoops with the Twitter hashtag #YachtWatch, will offer journalists her tips for tracking down hidden assets.
Spencer Woodman, a reporter with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), who worked on the prize-winning investigations of the Pandora Papers in 2021, the FinCEN Files in 2020 and the Paradise Papers in 2017, revealing shadow financial systems, money laundering and offshore interests of the global elite.
Juan Zarate, a former assistant secretary of the Treasury, now global co-managing partner at K2 Integrity – a compliance, investigations, and monitoring firm, the Chairman for the Center on Economic and Financial Power, and author of Treasury’s War: The Unleashing of a New Era of Financial Warfare.
