Fact: Three diseases essentially eradicated in the U.S. due to the success of vaccines: Smallpox, diphtheria and polio.

Dr. Daniel Salmon, deputy director of the Institute for Vaccine Safety at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, said it’s inaccurate to call people “anti-vaccine” because such a small percentage of parents do not get their children vaccinated. He said 77 percent of parents have concerns about vaccines, ranging from inflicting pain on their children, too many vaccines in infancy, and fears about safety or learning disabilities. But the majority of those go ahead and get their children vaccinated.
