Tobacco Harm

Though smoking is on the decline in the United States and other developed nations, it is on a destructive upward trajectory elsewhere, said Dr. Judith Mackay, senior advisor to the World Lung Foundation and the Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use. “There are simply more people in the world, it’s as simple as that.”

Fast facts:

* There are currently 1.1 billion smokers in the world; this number is expected to increase to 1.6 billion over the next two decades.

*Two in three smokers will die of tobacco-related causes — roughly one-third from cancer, one-third from respiratory disease and one-third from heart disease.

*One in three fires worldwide is caused by smoking.
