A National Geographic editor details how centering inclusion and diverse voices has transformed the content of one of the most respected publications in American history.
Program Date: March 20, 2022

When National Geographic’s first female editor was developing the idea for a special issue about race, there was a problem. According to the magazine’s Executive Editor for History and Culture Debra Adams Simmons, Susan Goldberg found herself in a planning meeting for the issue with five other people. All of whom were white males. That’s when Goldberg reached out to a former colleague, Adams Simmons, an African American journalist with a long record managing newspaper companies in the Midwest.
