Enrique Loyola and Tina Kiaer of the World Health Organization describe the wealth of data and other resources available to journalists reporting on country-specific efforts to control tobacco use.

Among the resources:

• An atlas of tobacco control policies and intervention efforts, detailing country-by-country information on where smoking has been limited, what kind of marketing is allowed, and several other measures.
• The “Global Health Observatory” data, which allow viewers to drill into health statistics by country.
• The “Tobacco Free Initiative” country profiles, which show a detailed, 13-page breakout for each country. That includes what’s known as a nation’s MPOWER measures, which summarize its progress toward tobacco-free status.
• Tobacco use prevalence data, broken down by sex and country. This includes data that can be downloaded in Excel tables for further analysis.
