Tips for reporters covering events, from USA Today editor Donna Leinwand Leger and McClatchy Newspapers congressional correspondent William Douglas:

* Low-tech: Be prepared for any kind of weather, and remember that when your paper gets wet, your pen won’t write. Bring a pencil and a manual sharpener.
* High-tech: In a giant crowd, it’s likely that cell towers will be overwhelmed and service will be slow. If you have two devices, with different providers, you double your chances of getting a call or text through.
* Bring only what you absolutely need. Security will be tight.
* Don’t expect to cover more than one event in one city on one day. Crowds and security will limit mobility.
