Move by Baby Boomers into Senior Status Will Impact Health Spending
Mark Mather, a demographer and associate vice president at the Population Reference Bureau, described major trends that will drive both the size of the country and the associated costs likely to strain its health care system.
The bureau, a nonprofit that tracks and analyzes U.S. Census Bureau and other demographic data, has a wealth of data that allows journalists to drill into population numbers and the trends impacting them.
Among the resources:
- The “Data Finder” tool, which allows users to make state and local charts and maps.
- Analyses of the American Community Survey, the Census Bureau program that collects information in between the major decennial census.
- A searchable site to access the bureau’s reports. An example report, from 2015: “Effects of the Great Recession on Older Americans’ Health and Well-Being.”
