Shealah Craighead is a photographer dedicated to capturing history as it unfolds. As a neutral observer, she positions herself at the heart of world events, documenting historic moments that reveal character. With over two decades of experience, she has built a career grounded in storytelling through visual documentation. Craighead served as an official White House photographer for two presidential administrations. Most recently, she was the director of the White House Photography Department and chief photographer to the 45th president, becoming the second woman in history to hold the role and the first to do so for an entire presidential term.

Beginning her career in photojournalism, Craighead worked as a freelancer for newspapers and photo agencies, covering breaking news and sports. After her first White House tenure, she documented presidential, gubernatorial, and Senate campaigns, capturing the intensity of political races before returning to the White
House in a leadership role. She has also served as the lead photographer for multiple gubernatorial inaugurations and a presidential inauguration. Her career has taken her into the most exclusive rooms of governance, where she has photographed presidents, world leaders and dictators, foreign dignitaries, athletes, activists, and royal families.

Her images have been published worldwide, shared across major news outlets, and have gone viral on social media. Currently, Craighead leads visual production teams for high-profile clients, specializing in legacy preservation, historical documentation, branding, and strategic visual storytelling. Her clientele includes distinguished individuals, from public figures to private clients who value meticulous attention to detail and compelling imagery. Raised in a family with photographic roots, Craighead developed an early passion for the craft while working in her parents’ photo lab in Connecticut. When she’s not capturing history, she can be found on road trips, mountaineering, or globetrotting to fuel her passion for travel.

Combined work and personal adventures have allowed her to travel across all 50 U.S. states and to more than 90 countries. She also mentors women in the industry, fostering the next generation of visual storytellers.

Craighead briefed National Press Foundation fellows in April 2025: Behind the Scenes at the White House: Photographers Tell Stories Words Can’t Capture.
