
Henderson briefed National Press Foundation fellows in March 2022: Transcending Fault Lines.
Felecia D. Henderson is director of Cultural Competency at the Maynard Institute for Journalism Education. She serves as a coach on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging issues in coverage and staffing for more than 100 print and broadcast organizations in the Knight Foundation-funded digital innovation programs across the country. She also leads Maynard’s signature Fault Lines® training program, the cultural competency curriculum for colleges and universities, and is a newsroom organizational change consultant.
Prior to joining the Maynard Institute in 2020, Henderson led the entertainment and lifestyle department at The Detroit News. As Assistant Managing Editor, she managed upwards of 45 journalists and was a member of the news organization’s senior management team responsible for newsroom operational planning. Henderson started her journalism career at her hometown newspaper, The Courier-Journal in Louisville, KY, and had stints at the Cincinnati Post and Detroit Free Press.
A longtime member of the National Association of Black Journalists, Henderson was a two-term president of the Detroit chapter and the organization’s vice president-print. She remains a member of the executive board. On the national level, she is a founding member of the NABJ Visual Task Force and in 2018 received the NABJ Visual Task Force Legacy Award. In 2019, the Society of Professional Journalists Detroit presented Henderson and her late husband, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Angelo B. Henderson, with a Lifetime Achievement Award. She is a recipient of awards from the Michigan Associated Press Media Editors, SPJ Detroit, Society of News Design, Michigan Press Association and the Gannett Corp.
She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Radio-TV/Journalism from Murray State University in Kentucky, which named her a Distinguished Alumna in 2019. She also earned a Master of Organization Development from Bowling Green State University and a Diversity and Inclusion Certificate from Cornell University.
