Dr. Jens Modvig is trained as a medical doctor and holds a doctorate in public health. He has used his medical background in the fight against torture for more than 25 years, as secretary general of the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims and currently as director of the Health Department in Dignity – Danish Institute Against Torture. In this function, he is responsible for the development and implementation of the health component of the Danish national preventive mechanism under optional protocol to the Convention Against Torture. In addition, Modvig is a clinical associate professor in social medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Copenhagen. In October 2013 and 2017, he was elected as a member of the United Nations Committee Against Torture, and in April 2016 and 2018, he was elected chair of the committee.
