Brakkton Booker is a correspondent at Politico and author of The Recast. It’s a twice-a-week newsletter that breaks down the intersection of race and identity are shaping politics, policy and power. Since joining Politico in 2021, he’s written about how the Kyle Rittenhouse verdict exposed America’s divide over who gets to carry a gun and how white vigilantism remains a very real threat in America following the conviction of the three white men for the murder of Ahmaud Arbery. He also covers a range of other topics including federal and state changes to voting rights to how critical race theory is becoming a dominant issue in the midterm election cycle. He previously served as a National Desk reporter based in Washington, D.C. for NPR.
Throughout his career there he tackled stores as varied as the federal social safety net programs, the Ferguson uprising and young activists pushing for changes to federal and state gun laws in the wake of the Parkland shootings. He also covered Barack Obama’s 2012 election campaign, Sen. Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s 2014 campaign and the 2016 presidential election where he was the lead producer from the Trump campaign headquarters on election night. Booker earned a bachelor’s degree from Howard University and was a 2015 Kiplinger Fellow.
