Amy Rutherford is a serial entrepreneur and the visionary founder behind one of Old Town Alexandria’s most beloved collection of independent boutiques. Drawing on more than a decade of local and international nonprofit fundraising and marketing experience, Amy launched her first retail concept, Red Barn Mercantile, in 2007 — and never looked back.

The store that started it all, Red Barn Mercantile is a destination general store that has been delighting customers for nearly two decades. Celebrated for its thoughtfully curated mix of home furnishings, gifts, and one-of-a-kind finds, it is the kind of store that rewards every visit with something new to discover. Award-winning and deeply rooted in the fabric of Old Town, Red Barn Mercantile is a testament to what independent retail can be when it is done with intention, taste, and genuine love for the community it serves.

Building on that success, Amy expanded her footprint with Penny Post, a sophisticated stationery boutique she opened exactly ten years and ten days after her first store. Tapping into both market opportunity and personal passion, Penny Post has become the go-to destination for discerning paper enthusiasts — offering a globally sourced selection of fine stationery and the work of independent artists that simply can’t be found anywhere else locally.

Most recently, Amy brought her retail instincts and a mother’s eye to Pippin Toy Co., filling a genuine gap in the market for a thoughtfully curated, independent toy store. Dedicated to quality, imagination, and curiosity-driven play, Pippin has quickly become a community favorite.

Beyond her businesses, Amy is a committed civic leader who generously contributes her time and resources to local nonprofits and the broader business community. She is driven by a simple but powerful belief: rising tides raise all boats. It is a philosophy that has shaped every venture she has built.

Amy lives in her beloved Alexandria with her husband Dan, her two children Will and Kate, and her dog Maggie.
