Robert “RJ” Matson won the 2019 Clifford K. & James T. Berryman Award for Editorial Cartoons. Matson is the editorial cartoonist for CQ Roll Call, and his cartoons are widely syndicated by caglecartoons.com.
The NPF judges said: “Matson’s cartoons combine visual clarity and instant impact. His drawing is fresh, clean and beautifully composed. Matson’s dry satire helps break down complicated issues and zeroes in on his point.”
Robert “RJ” Matson is the editorial cartoonist for CQ Roll Call, and his cartoons are widely syndicated by caglecartoons.com. His association with Roll Call goes back to 1986 when, fresh out of college, he was hired to draw caricatures and illustrations. Matson was the editorial cartoonist at the New York Observer from 1989 to 2010, and at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch from 2005 to 2013. His cartoons and illustrations have appeared in many publications, including The New Yorker, The Nation, MAD Magazine, Ethisphere, The Daily News, The Washington Post, Washington City Paper, Capital Style and Rolling Stone. He has created the cover art for 19 CDs put out by the Capitol Steps comedy troupe.
