
Jonah M. Kessel is a visual journalist at The New York Times, based in New York. From 2011 to 2016, he covered Asia for the video desk of The Times, working out of the Beijing and Hong Kong bureaus.
Mr. Kessel’s video journalism is a hybrid of explanatory and investigative short form documentary and other innovative forms of visual journalism. He has reported on the ground from over 25 countries for The Times.
He currently leads The Times’s cinematography efforts, managing strategy of aesthetic and technology as well as a team of Times video journalists specializing in camera technologies.
He was the co-winner of the 2020 NPF Innovative Storytelling Award along with Hiroko Tabuchi.
