John Cochran is the senior writer covering the Senate for Congressional Quarterly. He came to CQ in March 2001 to cover campaign finance, election overhaul legislation and this decade's congressional redistricting. He worked as a news editor, overseeing CQ's coverage of social policy and the judiciary, before returning to Capitol Hill in October 2002 to cover the Senate. Before coming to Washington, he worked for nine years at the News & Record in Greensboro, N.C., where he was a reporter, statehouse correspondent, editorial writer and political editor. As political editor, he oversaw coverage of local, state and federal government. Cochran began his career as a reporter for the Jackson Sun in Tennessee and the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot. He holds a bachelor's in journalism from the University of Missouri at Columbia.
