Hal Bernton has been a staff reporter with The Seattle Times since 2000, where has been involved in regional, military and investigative reporting. After Sept. 11, he traveled to France and North Africa to research the life of Ahmed Ressam, a young Algerian who was caught smuggling explosives through Washington. In December of 2003, h went to Iraq to cover the war and in 2005 he was in Indonesia to report on aid efforts in the aftermath of the tsunami. Bernton previously worked for the The Oregonian and The Anchorage Daily News, where he was part of a team that won the 1989 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. Bernton was born in Washington D.C. and started his journalism career as an intern for the late columnist Jack Anderson.
