Harrisburg Patriot-NewsDavid Newhouse, editor of the Harrisburg Patriot-News, will receive the Benjamin C. Bradlee Award as Editor of the Year for breaking and continuing to cover the Penn State University sex abuse scandal.
DAVID NEWHOUSE is the editor of The Patriot-News a 66,000-daily circ. newspaper in the Harrisburg, Pa. metro area. He has led the newsroom since arriving in 2001 from New Jersey where he had been a reporter, business editor and assistant managing editor of the Trenton Times. Under Mr. Newhouse, the paper’s affiliate web site PennLive.com has become the leading news website in central Pennsylvania and was the nation’s leading digital news source for the Jerry Sandusky story. The Patriot-News was named by the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association as Newspaper of the Year in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2010 and received top honors in the state’s Keystone Press Awards in 2004, 2006 and 2010. It is the smallest of Pennsylvania’s seven Division I papers, judged against those in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. The newspaper won national first amendment and public service awards from the Associated Press Managing Editors in 2007, and was named as one of Editor & Publisher’s “10 That Do It Right” in 2004. Mr. Newhouse hails originally from New Orleans. In his spare time, he is an actor and can be found on stage at the Harrisburg Shakespeare Festival where recent roles have included Cassius and Richard III. As to their impact on his newsroom, Mr. Newhouse offers no comment. He and his wife, Katharine, have four daughters and two grandchildren.
