Meribah Knight, host of the limited podcast series “Supermajority” from Nashville Public Radio (WPLN) and NPR’s Embedded, has won the National Press Foundation’s 2024 Reporting on Women in Politics Award.
Knight followed the story of three conservative mothers determined to pass gun reform laws in their home state of Tennessee following the 2023 shooting at The Covenant School.
“This series is a tour de force of in-depth reporting – sensitive, unsparing and grippingly told. It’s a morality play about women’s activism and citizens’ political participation, with national implications that are well explained but not overplayed,” NPF judges said. “The human impact of the political process and the stakes of local lawmaking are vividly laid out, with devastating results.”
The podcast episodes detail the mothers’ trips to Nashville, where they are determined to pass some form of gun control, even as life-long advocates of the Second Amendment. While at the statehouse, they witness the protests of a number of other issues such as abortion, education, police violence and LGBTQ rights.
Knight follows the women’s battle with their own political beliefs and what their journey means for the future of Tennessee and if they truly made an impact.
“The mothers’ motives and actions are deeply relatable. But it’s also because the story is told in a nuanced, thoughtful, multidimensional way,” NPF judges said.
The award was established by NPF in 2024 in partnership with Pivotal Ventures. The award aims to recognize outstanding reporting on women in politics in any medium which demonstrates nuance, context and accuracy on this topic. NPF released Journalism Guidelines for Covering Women in Politics (pdf) in 2024 focused on three pillars – sourcing, language and framing – for newsrooms to consider.
