
Felix Contreras has been a journalist for over 45 years and has been with NPR since 2001. He is the co-creator and host of Alt.Latino, NPR’s pioneering radio show and podcast celebrating Latin music and culture since 2010.
In addition to his post behind the mic, Contreras also programs music from the Latin diaspora for the acclaimed Tiny Desk concerts and hosts the annual A Jazz Piano Christmas in front of a live audience in the Kennedy Center’s Terrace Theater every December.
A knowledgeable international ambassador for Latino heritage and arts, “Tio Felix ” travels extensively in search of new sounds and to catch up with important legacy performers in Latin music and jazz. As a leading voice on Latino culture Contreras has been quoted by national and international publications on the contemporary influences of Latin culture, music, and media. He has also gives speeches and moderates panels on cultural topics around the country.
He is also NPR’s resident Deadhead and performs as a drummer/percussionist around the DC area with his Latin Beatles cover band, Los Day Trippers as well as various bands and groups.
