Jayson Blair spoke to National Press Foundation Paul Miller Washington Reporting fellows May 10, 2024: “Removing Newsroom Guardrails Invites Ethical Lapses.”
Jayson Blair is a podcast host and, since 2010, has been the managing partner of Goose Creek Consulting, a firm that specializes in leadership development, executive coaching, career coaching and mental health coaching. But Jayson remains most known for the 2003 scandal he ignited at The New York Times through plagiarizing and fabricating stories in what The Times called the “lowest point in its 150-year history.”
Following the scandal, Jayson has almost two decades of experience working with clients in the areas of mental health, life transitions and leadership development. He focuses helping the “whole person” as a means to help people live better lives, but to also help organizations thrive through a recognition that the engagement and well-being of employees is what helps organizations be effective.
Jayson’s experience at The Times and his diagnosis with bipolar disorder have been key motivators in his desire to help others. His diagnosis came after The Times scandal, when the newspaper helped him find treatment following his resignation.
In his current work, Jayson uses his personal experience to help inform his approach. His specialties include the intersection of personality and recovery, being able to take ownership and motivation. He is a member of the Hogan Coaches Network, an elite, international group of 60 coaches and consultants who are experts in personality and values assessments. On his interview-based podcast, The Silver Linings Handbook, Jayson focuses on conversations that inspire others. He has also appeared on other podcasts, including The Prosecutors: Legal Briefs, Armao on the Brink, Artistic Spirit, Just Legal History and The Murder Sheet, where he often discuses topics, such as mental health and journalism.
He sits on the Board of the International Bipolar Foundation and the Board of Visitors at McLean Hospital, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School.
