
Monica Romo spoke to NPF fellows in McAllen, Texas January 24, 2023 on “Responding to Trauma in Immigrant Children.”
Monica Romo is the senior program coordinator for Girasol at the Texas Institute for Child & Family Wellbeing, within the Steve Hick’s School of Social Work at The University of Texas at Austin. A graduate of Our Lady of the Lake University, where she earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in social work, Romo is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with experience working with immigrants in various settings. She has extensive experience working with unaccompanied minors as a therapist providing trauma-responsive mental health services for detained unaccompanied pregnant and parenting girls, as a Child Advocate Supervisor at the Young Center for Immigrant Children Rights where she primarily worked with young children separated under the “zero tolerance” policy, and as a Clinical Supervisor for Enhanced Post Release Services. Additionally, Romo has provided mental health services to underserved children and adults as a therapist in both in-patient and out-patient settings.
