Orecchio briefed National Press Foundation journalists in July 2022: Better Reporting on Mental Illness.
Haven Orecchio-Egresitz is Insider’s senior criminal justice reporter. Her work on the NY-based enterprise team largely consists of advancing breaking news stories on the crime beat — such as police killings, mass shootings and trial coverage. Outside of the daily grind, her focus is on deeply reported projects that emphasize the victims of broken systems, trauma, and cults.
Prior to landing in New York in 2020, Haven spent six years covering crime and courts at The Boston Globe, Cape Cod Times and Berkshire Eagle. At the Globe, she contributed to the paper’s Pulitzer-winning coverage of the Boston Marathon Bombing. In 2017, she published an investigative series about the physical and sexual abuse of elderly residents at a Massachusetts nursing home. The series prompted the state to close the facility and relocate the residents.
In 2021, Insider published “Survivor’s Guilt,” Haven’s six-part series on the US mental health system failures that led to police shootings of people in crisis. The series won the 2022 New York Press Club award in National Crime Reporting.
