Dr. Avenancio-León is an assistant professor of finance at the University of California – San Diego. His work focuses on the determinants of group inequality including the effects of political or financial mechanisms in perpetuating inequalities across race, gender, and former incarceration status. For instance, he has coauthored a study documenting large racial gaps in property taxation, and another documenting the large effects of political enfranchisement through the Voting Rights Act on reducing labor market inequalities between Blacks and whites. His work has been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, CNN en Espa˜nol, among other outlets. It has also has garnered interest from different institutions including by local, state, and federal officials around the country and in Supreme Court litigation.
