Alberto Ibargüen, president of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, took a nontraditional path into journalism. After running his college newspaper, Ibargüen went to law school, worked in the Peace Corps and as a Legal Aid lawyer. He shifted toward the news business in positions at the Hartford Courant and New York Newsday, and then became publisher of The Miami Herald and El Nuevo Herald. The Herald won three Pulitzer Prizes under his direction. For his body of work, Ibargüen won the National Press Foundation’sW.M. Kiplinger Award for Distinguished Contributions to Journalism. NPF president Sandy K. Johnson interviewed Ibargüen about his career for NPF’s Master Class series.
