Date: April 19 - 22, 2009
Location: Norman, OK

In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the deadly wild-fires in California, and the devastating floods in Iowa; violent weather coverage has quickly become an important skill for journalists to master.  During our four-day  “Understanding Violent Weather” program, nineteen journalists from across the country traveled to the University of Oklahoma’s National Weather Center, where they learned about a wide range of weather related topics including basic meteorology, forecasting, reporting on different types of weather, working with emergency management officials, and using new media to cover weather emergencies.  The fellows toured the National Weather Center’s facilities the university’s Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication.
