The Complete Skinny on Why We’re Getting Fatter, What it Means, and What We Can Do About It

Are you ready to ramp up your knowledge and skills around one of today’s most important news topics? The National Press Foundation is collaborating with the Colorado Center for Health and Wellness to present a four-day, all-expenses-paid fellowship for journalists on “Obesity Issues: The Complete Skinny on Why We’re Getting Fatter, What it Means, and What We Can Do About It.”

Confirmed speakers include:

  • Center Executive Director James O. Hill, Ph.D., quoted in this Sunday NYT Magazine piece
  • Dr. John Peters, a leading nutrition and obesity researcher
  • Physician and nutrition researcher Dr. Holly Wyatt will discuss the latest research on how biology and behavior affect our waistlines
  • Registered dietician Kim Gorman, MS, will speak on Childhood Obesity, Nutrition and Exercise
  • Jack L. Groppel, Ph.D., will present on "Breaking the Cycle: We Need to Become 21st Century Athletes"
  • Other scholars from the University of Colorado and elsewhere.

This on-the-record program will be held at the new Colorado Center for Health and Wellness at the Anschutz Medical Center in Denver, Colorado, and will include an optional interactive facility tour.

Chosen fellows will:

* Hear and question national experts;

* Learn the newest science on the biology of obesity; environmental factors; and why lost weight so often comes back;

* Understand the relationship between obesity and chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes and Alzheimer’s;

* Discuss journalism practice, including development of story ideas, accurate reporting from scholarly journals and more;

* Analyze the economics of obesity;

* See how the Health-Care system responds;

* Evaluate strategies for a healthier workforce;

* Discuss why it's so hard to change behavior
