HIV/AIDS Global Media Training 2006 Toronto
The XVI International AIDS Conference was held in Toronto, August 13-18, 2006. The theme of this year's conference is Time to Deliver. In the 25 years since HIV/AIDS was discovered, much research has been done to understand the disease and to develop prevention and treatment programs to halt the spread of this epidemic. This year's conference focused on the many important questions yet to be answered.
The National Press Foundation again collaborated with the International AIDS Conference to present a free, comprehensive training program for journalists prior to the start of the conference. The program was modeled on previous collaborations in Barcelona 2002 and Bangkok 2004.
This year, 95 journalists from 41 countries were selected to participate in the training program, including more than 40 journalists from China. All J2J fellows attended morning training sessions and then attended one of three afternoon discussion sections lead by J2J faculty. Some of the seminar topics included stigma, human rights, TB, female condoms, microbicides, pediatric AIDS, rural nutrition and HIV and vaccine research.
The program was underwritten with funds from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, The Merck Company Foundation, Abbott, Open Society Institute and the XVI International AIDS Conference. Bayer Pharmaceuticals also underwrote some of the costs for the Chinese Tshinghua University journalists.
