Peg Downey

Peg Downey, principal in Direction$ LLC (whose mission is to empower, educate and engage women in personal finance), partner emeritus in the fee-only financial planning firm Money Plans, in Silver Spring, MD, NAPFA advisor, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER(TM) and registered investment advisor, has over 28 years experience providing financial advice to individuals.  Prior to becoming a founding partner of Money Plans, she was responsible for developing a two-year financial education program for the 200,000 members of the American Association of University Women.

Ms. Downey is past national chairperson of NAPFA (the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors) and served on the NAPFA Board for four years.  She has also been involved with projects sponsored by the College for Financial Planning, the International Board of Standards and Practices for Certified Financial Planners, Affording Care, and AARP, including their Women's Financial Independence Programs.  She just completed five years as Dean of  NAPFA University’s College of Communications, and is Finance Editor for Crone magazine.

Ms. Downey has been honored  by Worth magazine, Medical Economics, Mutual Funds, and Bloomberg’s Wealth Manager as one of the "Top Financial Advisors in America."    Her "Financial Planning Bill of Rights" was chosen by the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors for national distribution and has been reprinted in a number of newspapers, magazines, and financial texts.  She is  also a certified presenter for the “Seven Stages of Money Maturity Workshops” and also trains other financial planners in the “Seven Stages.”  

She has written a weekly column for “myprimetime.com” exploring the financial as well as emotional issues around money, is regularly quoted in the financial press, and is also a frequent presenter at financial planning conferences.  She is also a contributor to Tips from the Top:Targeted Advice from America’s Top Money Minds, published December 2002.  Her chapter on financial planning for single parents appeared in The Handbook for Single Adoptive Parents.

Ms. Downey has her M.A. from George Washington University, her B.A. from the University of Rochester, and her CFP from the College for Financial Planning.
