Dr. Philippe Glaziou, senior epidemiologist for the Stop TB Department at the World Health Organization, studied medicine at Bordeaux University and received degrees in epidemiology, statistics and tropical diseases from Paris University VII. He has led a number of epidemiological and clinical trials on leprosy, tuberculosis, dengue fever, lymphatic filariasis and HIV/AIDS, among other infectious diseases. From 1989 to 1996 he was posted to the Institute Malarde in the Territory of French Polynesia, where he was in charge of TB and leprosy control programmes. Subsequently he did research at the Institute Pasteur in Bangui, Central African Republic and the Institute Pasteur of Cambodia in Phnom Penh. Dr Glaziou joined the World Health Organization in 2004, based at first in the Regional Office for the Western Pacific. He moved to WHO Headquarters in Geneva in 2008 and currently leads a team in charge of analyzing TB epidemiological data and publishing estimates of the burden of TB for every country.
