Austin Smythe

Austin Smythe is the Staff Director for the Republican staff of the House Budget Committee.

Prior to joining the House Budget Committee staff, Mr. Smythe was the Executive Associate Director at the Office of Management and Budget from 2001 to 2007, where his primary focus was assisting the Director with putting together the President’s annual budget submission and with other budget issues. In the summer of 2003, he served as acting Director of OMB.

From 1999-2001, Mr. Smythe was a Vice President in Lehman Brothers' Washington, DC, office where he monitored and analyzed budget, natural resources, and tax issues for the firm's Equity Research Division.

From 1983-1999, Mr. Smythe served on the Republican Staff of the Senate Budget Committee, under the leadership of Senator Pete V. Domenici.

Mr. Smythe earned his BA in Government from the University of Texas. He received his MA from the L.B.J. School of Public Affairs. He resides in Virginia with his wife and two children.
