Energy Information Administration

About the Energy Information Administration

The Energy Information Administration was created by Congress in 1977 at the same time as the Department of Energy. Its mission, as an independent agency, is to gather reliable and unbiased energy information, which is used by the public and by policymakers in industry and government.

Quite simply, the EIA has a lot of energy information.  The administration's web site tracks use, supply and prices of energy – including oil, natural gas, nuclear power and renewable resources -- across the globe. The staff gathers this data by surveying energy producers, users, transporters and other businesses. That information is used in the administration's regular analyses and forecasts. The major forecasts, which are watched by the media, are the Annual Energy Outlook, the International Energy Outlook, and the monthly Short-Term Energy Outlook.

Address

1000 Independence Ave., SW
Washington, DC 20585

The Annual Energy Outlook, which usually comes out in final form in January or February, projects the domestic energy consumption, production, imports and exports, distribution and prices to 2030. The International Energy Outlook, which comes out in May or June, provides projections to the year 2030 of world energy consumption.

Also widely watched by energy markets and Wall Street, are the EIA's weekly petroleum status reports released on Wednesdays and the Weekly Natural Gas Storage Report released on Thursdays. The former estimates U.S. petroleum inventories and the latter U.S. natural gas inventories.
