Winner of NPF’s Distinguished Contributions to Journalism Award

Frank Deford, winner of the 2012 W.M. Kiplinger Distinguished Contributions to Journalism Award, died May 28 at his home in Florida. Revered for his beautiful writing, Deford’s career spanned six decades and ranged across the media spectrum: writing for Sports Illustrated, commentary for NPR and HBO, and author of several books.

In accepting NPF’s distinguished contributions to journalism award, Deford said, “I am sincere in saying that I feel this honor does at least obliquely recognize sports journalism, which selfishly I believe is often overlooked.”

Deford was also an NPF judge for the inaugural Carolyn C. Mattingly Award for Mental Health Reporting.
