Journalist Hacking Raises Awareness for Cyber-Security

Wired Magazine Senior Writer Mat Honan’s entire digital life was wiped clean in less than an hour by hackers.

As a technology journalist, he should have known better, right? Honan explains in detail how his G-mail, Amazon account, Macbook, iPhone, iPad and his Twitter account, @mat, were taken over. He knows how it happened because the hacker, who calls himself “Phobia” told Honan exactly how he did it.

Honan’s Twitter account now reads “Probably Matt Honan” emphasis on “probably.”

This comes shortly after NPF’s recent Capitol Hill Issues Briefing on Cyber-Security. Experts included Chase Cunningham, Chief of Cyber Analytics with Decisive Analytics Corporation, Ryan Kazanciyan of Mandiant, Laurie Schive, Office of the National Counterintelligence Executive and Kristen Verderame, CEO of Pondera International. The information from this workshop is valuable to technology and nontechnology writers alike.

A lot can be learned from Honan’s hacking. After listening to his explanation of how The Cloud made him vulnerable on NPR, I found some common elements in what our speakers at the briefing had to say.
