Amber Dance Wins 2010 Evert Clark/Seth Payne Award

The winner of the 2010 Evert Clark/Seth Payne Award, an annual prize for young science journalists, is Amber Dance, a writer in Pasadena, Calif.

Dance received the award and its $1000 prize for four stories: “Bacterial Waists: Bacteria living in our guts may play a role in obesity,” in the Los Angeles Times; “From Pond Scum to pharmacy shelf,” in Nature Medicine;  “DNA Referees,” in the Los Angeles Times; and “Illegal Whale Meat Traced Back to Japan,” in Nature.

The panel of judges cited Dance for her impressive package of stories, which showed her versatility and mastery of topics that ranged from epigenetics to intestinal fauna. The judges said that Dance brought the reader deep into complex subjects with engaging writing, good organization, and the use of colorful quotes. The story on pond scum was a particular favorite.

NPF Internship Opening

The National Press Foundation seeks a responsible, organized and detail oriented intern for fall 2010 to help implement professional development programs for U.S. and international journalists. The intern will work directly with the NPF programs staff to plan and implement the logistics for journalist training programs here in DC as well as other U.S. and international locations. The topics of the training programs include cancer, Alzheimer’s, HIV vaccines and lung disease, as well as Capitol Hill Issues Briefings and DC reporting fellowships. Thanks for a Great Evening

Thank you to all of our supporters who braved the cold weather to attend the NPF Awards Dinner on Tuesday night.  It was truly inspiring to see that even in rough economic times; we were able to fill the Hilton Washington's ballroom with over 900 journalists, media professionals, policy makers and corporate executives who care about Journalism that matters. Kerry Buker joined NPF in June 2008. She manages the organizational operations, including NPF's Annual Awards Dinner, and assists with program implementation. Prior to joining NPF, Kerry worked as Director of Operations and Marketing at The Reform Institute, a public policy non-profit. Kerry holds a masters degree in Political Management from George Washington University and a bachelors in Communication from The Ohio State University.
