Study Finds ART Leads To Higher Pregnancy Rates In sub-Saharan Africa

60% of all people living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa are women.  And the number of women - particularly of child-bearing age - receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) is steadily rising.  But does ART lead to more pregnancies?  To answer that question, researchers from Cape Town University and Columbia University analyzed data from the Mother-to-Child Transmission-Plus (MTCT-Plus) Initiative, "a multi-country HIV care and treatment program for women, children, and families." He is a former producer at National Public Radio, where he helped launch the program Tell Me More with Michel Martin.  He started his career at NPR as a Kroc Fellow, a year-long training program focused on radio and multimedia storytelling.

The Indiana native moved to Oregon in the mid-1990's, where he obtained a B.A. in electronic media from the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication.  Before pursuing a career in broadcast journalism, Douglas worked in the field of public health, focusing on HIV/AIDS prevention among GLBT youth in rural Oregon.
