Sandy Rowe is editor of The Oregonian in Portland, Oregon. The Oregonian is the largest newspaper in the Northwest with a daily circulation of 345,000 and Sunday circulation of 425,000. Under her leadership, the newspaper has won three Pulitzer Prizes: for explanatory reporting in 1999, for feature reporting in 2001 and the Pulitzer Gold Medal in Public Service in 2001.

From l984 until April l993, Ms. Rowe was executive editor and vice president of The Virginian-Pilot and The Ledger-Star, Norfolk and Virginia Beach, Virginia. She had been with The Virginian-Pilot and The Ledger-Star for 22 years. The newspaper won the Pulitzer Prize for general news reporting in l985.

She chairs the Knight Foundation Journalism Advisory Board. The Knight Foundation, with approximately $2 billion in assets, is one of the 30 largest philanthropic foundations in the United States.

She is a member of the Medill School of Journalism Board of Visitors at Northwestern University and chairs the Board of Visitors of The Knight Fellowships at Stanford University. She also is a board member of the Committee to Protect Journalists based in New York.

Ms. Rowe served on the Pulitzer Prize Board from 1994-2003 and was its chairman in 2002-2003. Ms. Rowe was on the board of the American Society of Newspaper Editors from 1992-1999 and was the organization's president in 1997-1998.

Ms. Rowe is a graduate of East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C., and completed the program for Management Development at Harvard University's Graduate School of Business.
