In early 2011, The Center for Public Integrity jumped feet first into the digital revolution with the launch of iwatchnews.org. The site represents an innovative leap for a 22-year-old newsroom that had been accustomed to publishing major investigations only a few times a year. Since iwatchnews.org launched on April 13, 2011, the Center has published more than 1,000 stories that have been viewed by more than 1.2 million unique visitors, and cited in the media more than 6,300 times. More importantly, this new digital strategy allows the Center’s journalists to join growing communities of engaged citizens, passionate about our work in politics, the environmental, healthcare, justice, and national security. With almost 12,000 Twitter followers and 11,389 Facebook fans, CPI is connecting with thousands more people on a daily basis than ever before in our history. Our website runs on the open-source Drupal 7 content management system, a flexible platform that allows our small production and development team to continually update features and tools as we learn more about our audience. But while our website evolves, our mission remains the same: to reveal abuses of power, corruption and dereliction of duty by powerful public and private institutions in order to cause them to operate with honesty, integrity, accountability and to put the public interest first.
